To Know More about Different Kinds Ink in Large Format Printing

When it comes to color printing, there are several different types of ink that are used. Each of these inks has their own characteristics which offer certain benefits in some areas while perhaps lacking in others. In wide format printing, the types of inks used are very important to get across the message and create the exact type of design that is desired.

What follows are five of the most common types of color printing ink that are used and the differences between them.

Aqueous Inks
These are water-based inks that have two varieties called Dye and UV. The dye inks are mixed with water when applied and then the water evaporates to leave the ink behind. The advantage is the bright colors that it can deliver. However, these types of inks will fade rather quickly under the ultraviolet rays of the sun, so they are best kept indoors. Also, the dye inks are not waterproof either, so they are best used for short terms promotional work.

UV inks are similar to chalk dust that is suspended in the water. When the water evaporates they leave behind the chalk like little dots which then forms the image. They are very resistant to UV rays and will last longer. However, they do not have the color brilliance of dye inks.

Dye Sublimation Inks
You can choose between the aqueous type which is used for desktop and wide format printing and the solvent type which is used from Spectra, XAAR and Konica wide format printing devices. It is not quite inkjet printing, but it is a type often confused with such.

Solvent Inks
These are generally pigment inks which contain dyes, but they do not use water. Instead, they use volatile organic compounds instead that are relatively inexpensive and quite flexible on certain types of surfaces. Solvent inks are waterproof, UV resistant and are very brilliant in terms of the color provided. However, their main benefit is the durability of the ink itself which holds up quite well in all types of conditions.

Of course, the main drawback is the toxic chemicals used in their creation. For consumers, it matters little but in terms of production special care must be taken.

UV Cured Inks
These are inks which are “cured” by being exposed to strong UV-light. They dry quickly which makes them quite appealing to printers and they can be used on a number of different surfaces. Unfortunately, they are also quite expensive as well which makes a costlier proposition for those who want to use such inks for their color printing.

Latex Inks
A new type of ink that can be used on many different surfaces including vinyl, this particular type offers many advantages in that it acts much like solvent inks but without the dangerous toxic chemicals. However, there are chemicals used which are not totally environmentally friendly as well. For many, these types of inks are still new, but offer a lot of promise.

Why Large format Printing More and More Popular in Digital Printing?

Nowadays, Large format Printer is Popular and important in our daily printing. Large format printing is a kind of advertising medium which has only risen in popularity over time. The main aim of this technology is to support the maximum width rolls in printing. For printers, they enjoy a larger area to express their skill. Large format printing is used to print murals, banners, wallpapers, and posters. These are perfect for materials which have a dominance of graphics or visuals. The large texts and images make the large format prints extremely effective advertising tools. The result is a greater impact. A bigger number of customers are usually attracted to large format printing.

 Process advantage

Large format printing is known by other names like grand printing or wide-format printing. Prints are not done on individual sheets. Instead, prints are made in rolls which are fed incrementally. The printing process itself is similar to digital with the exception of being a bigger printer with nozzles. Paper stocks are fed into printer whee ink gets directly applied into the material. The printing phase is much faster-producing premium quality colors. A wide format printer has seven important components: ink supply station left rear cover for ink, heater, right rear cover for ink, waste ink bottle, roll paper, and USB station.

The printers themselves are highly efficient machines which generate high-quality results. These are water-based. The UV inks are much duller in color and resist fading. They are also excellent for outdoor use.

Wide usage

Posters are generated through large format printing. Wall decors, trade show displays or POP, retail graphics, and photo prints are displayed. It is possible to mount them in gator boards or semi-gloss paper dominant stock. Vinyl banners are also printed through wide format printing. These are also extremely popular when it comes to outdoor usage. They are excellent for exhibit displays and trade shows.

Large format printer is also used to generate wall stickers or graphics. These are excellent to jazz up any wall. Interior spaces can be provided a completely new perspective. The wall graphics generally get printed on the sticker papers. Such prints are resistant to fading and can be repositioned if needed. Consumers nowadays are increasingly turning towards large format printing as they want everything fast and cheap. The wide format printing method perfectly suits such requirements. These are much more affordable compared to other print techniques like screen printing. This kind of printing can be easily made and the production cost is also cheaper. Higher quality printing can be achieved from standard quality materials.

What's The Importance of Rip Software for Inkjet Printers?

It’s fair to say a RIP software is one of the most important elements of a successful printer’s workflow. It is used to transform designed pictures (many files types) into languages that can be recognized by the inkjet printer, thus the final print matches what is on the computer, make printing easier and more efficient. Today we mainly talk about several kinds of common-used RIP software for wide format inkjet printers, those are Maintop RIP software, Photoprint RIP software, and Ultraprint RIP software.

This blog will be combined with RIP software’s features & difference and our OnePrint printer’s actual usage.

Maintop RIP Software
Cause Maintop is cheap and ease-of-operation, widely used for domestic large format inkjet printers.

Advantages
It’s cheap, often regarded as a standard configuration for printing machines.
The page setup is concise and ease-of-use.
It works best on eco solvent printers, able to produce a vivid image showing fine layers and smooth gradations. (when construct graphic designs, suggest CMYK modes.)

Disadvantages
The Maintop control interface only support Chinese and English, other languages are not available. (Rest assured, we have detailed software operation guide)
Support limited file formats, a bit more cumbersome.
Solutions: when using graphic design software like CorelDRAW, Photoshop, Illustrator, suggest saved as JPG, TIF formats.

Note
There are 5.3 version and 6.0 version in Maintop RIP software.

Maintop 6.0 can support more file formats like PDF. But a large difference between the two is 6.0 version able to make spot color.

That means if you need white ink or varnish to create embossed effects, select 6.0. If you only need color inks, 5.3 is enough suitable.

Photoprint RIP Software

Advantages
The outstanding feature, also the reason for its popularity is the ability to install in 10 kinds of languages, including Chinese (simplified & traditional version), Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish.
Allow users to transform designed pictures of almost all file formats.

3. The final print color reproduction is better than Maintop RIP software, you will get what you pay.

Note: Also two versions, PhotoPrint DX11 (color inks), PhotoPrint DX12 ( color inks+white ink/ varnish).

UltraPrint RIP Software

For OnePrint desktop UV flatbed printers and solvent printers, only UltraPrint RIP software is available.

Advantages
Compared with Maintop, UltraPrint can create a better color performance at a faster speed.
Support more file formats.

Disadvantages
The print console is English only.

Why The Price is Much Difference for Large Format Printers ?

This is also a printer selection guide serving for new beginning end-users who lack both experience and knowledge. With the same kind of digital printer boast the same capabilities, what’s the reason for a different price?

Ok, let’s have a look and go depth with the following points.  (No based on a fake printer, refitted printer or second-hand printer to talk about the price difference. here are original and new. )

 1. Printer Supplier
Identify the nature of the printer supplier.

Whether the large format printer supplier is a manufacturer, distributor, OEM production agent or solo sales.
If you buy from manufacturers, the price is the lowest.
Most factory will also choose OEM production for some printer series to make up the insufficiency in technology. (If you buy the OEM production printers, the price is nearly the same as distributors. )
There is a number of customers like to reach cooperation with the agent due to all-sided and meticulous service.
Solo sales are no need to spend money on running a business company, usually developing business by small profit margins and quick returns. Buying printers from them, the price is cheaper than distributors.
2. The printer supplier’ brand level. like Roland, Mimaki, Mutoh…their printer price is much more expensive than domestic printers.

2. Printhead
The printhead is the most expensive and core parts for inkjet printers.

Different brand and models, industrial or non-industrial, locked or unlocked,  the print head price is much different.

As the price of Epson DX5 is 1050USD, while the Epson XP600 price is 200USD, industry-class Ricoh Gen5 head is 1800USD. Which printhead should you choose is depending much on your business demand, (resolution, speed, lifespan.)

To some extent, the printers’ printhead configuration (model and quantity) shows the supplier technical level.

Here are some printhead comparison blog, you can check:

3. Printer Parts, Machine Design, Control System
Printer Parts

Like servo motor, drag chain, guide rail, belt, ink pump, bearing…these are printers’ core parts, the brand name can be recognized by parts itself. Famous brands are more quality-assured, help you away from maintenance troubles.

Here we talk about the control system and RIP software.

Widely-used Control System:  BYHX system, Hoson system, UMC system… Using authoritative printer system also can confirm suppliers’ technical level. The printer system is closely related to output quality and stability.
Common-used RIP Software: PhotoPrint, Maintop, Onyx, UltraPrint… Check Maintop, UltraPrint, PhotoPrint Difference.
Machine Design: Printing Width, Steel or Aluminum

If your targeted printer supplier has large size printers, to some degree, ensuring the power. And the wider printing width will lead to more expensive machine design, to support the smooth and accurate movement.

Meanwhile, all core structures are made of aluminum will result in consistent carriage move with a long lifespan compared to the steel structure.

4. Price Component
You should clarify whether the price is bare machine price, or including printhead, media take up system, heating system…Optional parts also cost much…

The Reasons for Why Dye Sublimation is Rapidly Increasing

DYE SUBLIMATION PRINTING ON FABRIC
In recent years, advancements in print technology, equipment, and materials have allowed for further visual merchandising and marketing creativity. Dye sublimation, the preferred imaging method for soft signage and exhibition graphics, uses an ink-jet based method of printing colorants onto fabric.

The dying process involves both heat and pressure to integrate the dyes with the material. Often called dye-sub for short, the cutting edge printing method allows for rich color saturation and efficiencies in shipping, handling and installation.

Seven reasons why demand for dye-sub printing is rapidly increasing:
1. Dye-sub lasts longer than most alternatives.
The actual chemical bonding of the ink with the soft material means dye sublimation printing is extremely durable. Dye-sub prints last just as long as traditional graphics, and they’re also easy to take care of. They can be washed or steamed easily.

2. Dye-sub prints look great.
Materials printed with the dye sublimation process present images that are distinctly superior to inkjet or other printing methods. The dye sublimation process imparts a continuous flow of color rather than individual dots or pixels that typify inkjet printers.

As a result, from distances both near and far, the colors are clearer and brighter when professional dye-sub equipment is used. Given the remarkable depth of color and sharply defined edges, any side-by-side comparison is immediately conclusive.

3. Dye-sub is versatile.
Dye sublimation prints work great for either indoor or outdoor use. They are also easily shaped – the flexibility and fluidity of fabric allows it to conform to most any desired shape or contoured appearance.

Silicone edge graphics, also known as SEG, involve adding a thin strip of silicone around the edges of a dye-sub printed fabric. The fabric can then be easily mounted on an aluminum frame. This installation process is very user-friendly. Any store staff can easily install new graphics without hiring a separate crew.

4. Large format printers options.
With dye sublimation, you can easily print 16 feet by any length. As a single seamless piece, dye-sub provides many large-format application benefits.

5. Variety of digital textile materials.
Materials can range anywhere from wovens, vinyls, polyesters, and rigid materials, as long as they are treated with a direct polyester coating (done by the manufacturer). The finished product will be inherently strong, resilient and dimensionally stable. For installation, aluminum frames allow for a low-cost and lightweight solution for fabrics that still looks better than its more expensive and heavier alternatives.

Dye-sub printed fabric is lighter than traditional rigid materials resulting in reduced weight. As a result, shipping costs are exponentially lower than with other printing methods. Wide format dye-sub fabric can be folded (rather than rolled or packed flat), so it takes up far less space and can be shipped for a much lower cost.

7. Efficient storage.
Compared to rigid substrates, fabric is lightweight and flexible allowing for more efficient storage. Due to the convenience of storage, dye-sub pieces can easily be repurposed for future campaigns.

Retailers and brand marketers alike are turning to digital textile printing as their next retail point-of-purchase solution. Whether you are already using fabric graphics as a part of your visual marketing plan, or you are just thinking about incorporating fabric graphics as a part of your strategy, you should consider using dye-sub fabrics for your signage or exhibition needs.

You Need to Know How Dye Sublimation Printer Working in Printing

Dye sublimation printing requires heat to transfer dye onto paper, card, fabric and other similar materials. Apparel, photos, and even ceramic tiles make use of this method of printing. Dye sublimation printing got its name because it was first believed that the dye went through the solid and gas states without undergoing a liquid stage. When that proved to be incorrect, it was too late to change the name due to its popularity.  The term dye-diffusion is the factually correct term.
 History of Dye Sublimation Printing
The earliest evidence of this printing method traces back to 1957 in France. Noël de Plasse developed the method of printing for Sublistatis SA when he observed that dyes sublimate. The mass production of transfer papers used with the ribbons grew rapidly in the 1960s to the mid-1970s.

The Jet Propulsion Lab in the United States later invented the first ever computer printing machine that used the dye sublimation method. Wes Hoekstra led this project and became known as the father of computer image sublimation. Later works of Hoekstra include toner sublimation, but his continuous development of the then popular method led to millions and then billions of transfer papers sold to the public.

How It Works
Most dye-sublimation printers go through the same process. Unlike inkjet printers that put individual dots per color on paper, this produces a much more photo-realistic output. It takes a roll of transparent film then makes it go through a series of colored cellophane: red, blue, yellow, and gray.

The output of the printer occurs after the print head heats up. It passes over the transparent film which causes the vaporization of the dyes applied instantaneously on the film. When turned into their solid form, they appear glossy and without the individual dots that inkjet printers produce.

Uses
Unlike most computer printing methods, dye sublimation can be used on a variety of materials aside from paper. Though companies have since moved on from printing their paperwork with this method, many mass produced items still use it. Items such as skateboards, car hoods, floor mats and promotional posters are some of the best examples that you can observe today.

If you have an item made of nylon or polyester fabrics, then you can take advantage of the dye sublimation method. Items undergoing this printing method have more photo-realistic, vibrant colors. Many art styles take advantage of this method. Digital artists use this printing style to preserve how their art looks physically when exported from a computer.

Do You Know Why Dye-sublimation Printer is So Popular?

What is a dye-sublimation printer?

A dye-sublimation printer uses heat to transfer dye onto photo paper. This process works to create a gentle gradation at the edges of each pixel, producing a continuous tone.
The dye-sublimation process produces higher quality images than other types of printing processes. Unlike inkjet printers, which lay down tiny individual dots, dye-sublimation printers use heat to vaporize and permeate dye onto paper for a smooth transition of color. The result is a more realistic-looking photograph. Not only are dye-sub photos of higher quality, they are also less vulnerable to fading and other dangers, like water damage, over time.

Convenient Printing

Large format sublimation printers have had a reputation for slow printing in the past, but things have changed. There are many models of dye-sublimation printers that print at high-speeds and at a high capacity. This function makes dye-sub printers perfect for on the spot printing at events or theme parks. There’s no need to worry about photos getting tarnished by smudges, either. Photos are dry and ready to handle the moment they exit the printer.

Variety Features

Dye-sublimation printers come in many different shapes and sizes. If you need your dye-sub printer on the go, many companies offer compact models. If your business requires a high volume of prints in a short amount of time, a dual deck model may be the way to go. Many dye-sublimation printers produce multiple image sizes and photo finishes. Some are designed specifically for photo booth printing, while others are best suited for event photography and use in a portrait studio.

With a dye-sublimation printer, you can produce images of quality to reflect your photography skills. Mitsubishi Photo Imaging offers a line of the highest quality dye-sublimation digital photo printers available, designed for photo booth applications, event and sports photography, wedding and portrait photography, and theme park souvenir applications. Make sure to carefully review all Mitsubishi dye-sub printer models to ensure you get the right printer for your professional photography needs.
