For high-quality graphics for indoor and short-term outdoor use, it’s hard to beat a Mutoh. Their wide-format printers, designed specially for dye sublimation and imaging applications, can use water-based or pigment ink across a wide range of substrates for poster and graphical applications or can be loaded with Mutoh disperse dye sublimation inks for soft signage applications. Looking for versatility? With a Mutoh turnkey solution, you’ve found it.

 Opportunities to expand
The signage market is growing fast, and demand is spreading beyond vinyl and banner to soft signage and textile printing. With a Mutoh wide-format printer, you’ll be able to add this to your portfolio to create new revenue streams. Would your clients be interested in eye-catching in-store textile decoration and displays? Could you take advantage of the market for textile banners, pop-ups, sportswear or personalised home decoration? Your creativity is the only limit on exploiting this burgeoning print market.

Highlight your green credentials
Using Mutoh’s water-based dye sublimation inks to print on uncoated recyclable polyester-based materials doesn’t require any forced ventilation – the inks don’t contain any harmful VOCs or hazardous components and the prints emerge odourless. It’s good for your staff and for the environment.

Add to that the fact that soft signage is light and can be folded – it’s easier to pack and cheaper to ship. This means reduced transport costs for you and less strain on the planet’s resources. Soft signage can also be washed and re-used, so it’s easy to see why it’s the best solution from an environmental point of view.

See your profits soar
Buy your water-based dye sub inks in bulk and you’ll be printing at a lower cost per copy. Paper prints can be produced much faster, so at the same time you can increase your productivity. When it comes to soft signage, uncoated polyester is cheap and widely available. So, while you’re saving costs, you can be offering your clients a high-end luxurious product with a premium look and feel to it. It all adds up to wider margins than regular vinyl and banner prints – so get ready to see your profits soar.

An Introduction for Textile Printing with Large Format Printers

It’s no secret that large format printer digital printing on textiles is a growth area in the print industry or that it can provide an extended range of opportunities for print service businesses – from soft signage to home decorating, from sportswear to promotional goods. But if you’re new to this sector of the market, what do you need to know before making an investment?

 The range of opportunities
Textile printing technology is moving forward with leaps and bounds, and while this opens up a great range of opportunities, it also makes your decision to invest more complex. So one of the first things to do is to work out what sort of textile printing will be best for you – in other words, what demand is there from your current clients and where will you be able to pick up new clients?

Some areas for consideration include:
Sign and display – soft signage offers a number of advantages. Polyester is replacing PVC for banners as it’s cheaper, lighter to transport, carries a lower carbon impact and is easy to install as banners, frontlits and backlits.

Promotional merchandising – today’s printers can handle caps, t-shirts, bags, suede, mouse mats and lots more, all great for selling online.

Interiors – there’s a world of opportunity here for customisable textile products such as cushions, curtains, bedding, upholstery and table linen, from small runs for exclusive interior designer ranges to one-offs such as personalised photographic cushion covers.

Sportswear – schools and local teams make a good market for customised kit.
Garments and fashion – fast fashion is competitive and usually requires high volumes and quick turnarounds, but there is potential for customised t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Technical textiles – this includes textiles for the aviation, nautical, automobile and military sectors. Given the complexity of the requirements, it’s probably not an area for beginners in the textile market.

Your choice of printer
Even though textile wide format printers are becoming more versatile, you’ll want to choose one best-suited to the type of fabric you’re most likely to be printing. For beginners in this market, polyester printing is the obvious choice – you can use it for signage, merchandising, interior décor and sportswear. In other words, choosing a dye sublimation system for printing on polyester will give you maximum versatility and opportunity for growth.

HP has just entered the dye sub market with its new HP Stitch S Printer series – the first dye sub printers to use thermal inkjet technology. The system is easy to use and has a lower environmental impact than other technologies such as acid or reactive.

Pigment-based ink technologies are also being developed to eliminate much of the pre- and post-processing, and these can be used to print cotton and cotton-mix fabrics, opening up the market for t-shirts, sportswear, bedding and home textiles.

What else will you need?

Processing – depending on the printing technology you choose, you might need calendaring, pre-treatments or post-processing. Take advice from your printer dealer about the best solutions for the printer you intend to buy. Getting the processing right is critical for the best quality results.

Finishing – cutting and sewing is an essential element of textile printing.
Colour management – this is one of the most challenging aspects of textile printing as you might need colour consistency across multiple machines or repeat orders. Bad colour management can result in high levels of wastage, so having a colour expert and the right equipment will be critical to your success.

Workflow management – textile printing is more specialised and complex than other forms of printing, so controlling the workflow is essential. Workflow management solutions, quality control and production metrics can be used to manage the process and minimize waste.

What's Need to be Consider about Your Large Format Printer Cost?

Whether you’re printing material for yourself or for clients, you probably feel the pressure to keep costs down and output high. Luckily, there are some things you can do to minimise your outlay without compromising on your quality – and if you follow our advice outlined below, you’ll find yourself getting better value for money out of your printing operation with a large format printer.

Combine print jobs
Use your wide format printer to combine the print run when you need to do smaller jobs. This will save time and reduce media wastage compared with printing out smaller items on their own. If you have nesting software, it will automatically combine individual images into the most cost-effective layout, but even without it, you can arrange a series of smaller prints to be printed together. As long as you have the ability to cut and trim the prints afterwards, you’ll be making the most of your media supplies and of your time.

Use print preview to reduce media wastage
If you train your operators to use print preview before they press the print button, you could save a significant quantity of wasted ink and paper over time as avoidable mistakes are eliminated.

Monitor your print job throughout
Keeping an eye on what’s coming out of the printer can give you early warning if your paper is feeding in skewed or if there’s a problem with the printheads or the way the ink is being laid down on the media. If you spot it and rectify it, it means that the whole print run isn’t ruined. This is where it can be a real advantage to have a printer with automatic sensors which can pick up any changes in ink density, or whether the paper is skewed or slack.

Use a secure printer
If your printer costs seem to be spiralling out of control, then you might need to look into whether there’s been some unauthorised printing going on. Make sure that printer access is granted only to those who need it, and monitor what’s being printed. Plenty of modern printers come with security systems and operators will need the appropriate approvals to be able to use them.

Take advantage of economies of scale
Although it might involve spending more at once, buying the largest possible ink cartridges your printer will take is the best way of keeping your ink costs down – and the savings can be significant. Some premium ink brands can be up to a third cheaper when bought in larger sizes. Additionally, printers that use reservoirs rather than cartridges can be particularly cost effective when it comes to ink, although it can involve more effort to keep them topped up.

Use speed to your advantage
The faster your printer, the more you can print – and the more you print, the lower the unit cost. A fast printer has a greater capacity, which means you can take on more work for clients or spend less operator time printing your own work. It could even mean that a slower printer could become redundant.

Use multiple rolls
If you set your printer up to be able to switch between rolls in dual roll mode, your operatives will save time changing the media between jobs. Users can simply pick which of the rolls to use when they’re setting up in the print menu.

The Evolution of Color Printing with Large Format Printer

As for modern colour printing, the first successful job took place over 40 years ago. Thanks to advancements in printer technology, colour printing is now more sophisticated than ever before.

In this blog, we take a look back over colour printing history, how this medium has evolved and developed over time and explore how we’ve got to the sophistication and impressive quality we see today.

What is colour printing with large format printer?
Colour printing involves the process of reproducing material in colour on a printed page. The wide spectrum of colours visible on a colour printed piece of work is created with a four-colour process.

In the four-colour process, the piece being reproduced is separated into three colours:

Cyan
Magenta
Yellow
The fourth colour – black - is then added too.

When was colour printing invented?
Colour printing has undergone dramatic developments in recent times, with the first successful colour print job being completed in 1977.

The process of printing itself can be traced back as early as 3000 BC. The 20th century’s advancement of computer technology led to modern electronic printing becoming more accessible.

Colour printing history
Colour printing has developed hugely over time thanks to the invention of the movable type press in the 16th century. Here are some highlights:

The movable-type press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1550.
The industrial revolution mechanized the print press and the introduction of lithography pushed the printing process forward, making it far easier for images to be transferred.

The 19th century saw advancements in photography and photomechanical printing plates, which helped to transform modern printing.
Colour printing, together with the development of colour monitors were developed in 1976 by the Mitsushita Corporation.
The very first two and three-colour printing processes were developed in 1910 thanks to advancements in technology, with the four-colour process being used in current modern printing.
Thanks to key advancements, such as the development of the first commercial photocopier in 1958 and the world’s first laser printer introduced in 1969, 20th century consumers were inundated with choice.
By the 1980s consumers could choose from a variety of wide format printers, including inkjet, laser and dot matrix.

By the late 1980s, colour printers were more readily available to consumers, more accessible and user-friendly.
Colour printers have developed to become the sophisticated pieces of technology we know and love today, producing colour print quality of the highest level, together with finish and quality that is second to none.

What's The Benefits of Eco-solvent Printing?

When you’re looking to print and produce high-quality images, there’s a never-ending number of options. Which printer to use, what type of ink cartridge to purchase and what material to print upon? A further decision you’ll need to contemplate is whether you want your printing to be eco-solvent printer.
When you’re looking to print and produce high-quality images, there’s a never-ending number of options. Which printer to use, what type of ink cartridge to purchase and what material to print upon? A further decision you’ll need to contemplate is whether you want your printing to be eco-solvent. Not sure what this is? Here we explain.

The benefits of eco-solvent printing
Eco-solvent inks have their colours suspended in a mild biodegradable solvent, which means that the ink has virtually no odour as they don’t contain as many volatile organic compounds. They’ve been around since the early 2000s and originally were designed for general signage work.

The lack of smell is a real plus point for eco-solvent inks. In some solvent inks not only do you get a strong smell during the printing process, meaning you need to consider the placement of your printer, but they can also leave an odour on the printed material itself. This can rule out printing onto material which will be displayed or used indoors.

Having less volatile organic compounds also means that the eco-solvent printing cartridges are not so damaging, or deteriorating, to your printer components and as such you won’t need to do full system cleans quite so often – although as with any type of printing you will need to do regular cleaning and maintenance of your printer from time to time.

Eco-solvent printing does require more heat in order to dry and this can affect the type of material you can print on. What’s more, the ink is not as durable as solvent inks. While it’s adequate for outdoor printing work, it’s best to only use it for applications which need to last a year or two.

Choosing between solvent and eco-solvent print
While there are clearly a number of benefits to eco-solvent printing, it may be that for the type of printing you wish to do, choosing eco-solvent ink may not be right for you.

As we have already touched upon, eco-solvent ink is not ideal for all types of material due to the heat required to dry it. If you need to use thin, cheap vinyl then solvent ink would be better.

If cost is a factor, you should be aware that eco-solvent inks are more expensive than solvent inks, due to the number of benefits that you get with eco-solvent printing. However, they are widely used by businesses and individuals who are just starting out, or who have a medium-sized printing need. Industrial printing is still typically done with solvent inks.

Finally, you’ll need to check what type of ink is compatible with your large format printer. If you know from the outset that you wish to use eco-solvent inks, you need to ensure that they are compatible with your printer.

If you are unsure whether your printer is compatible or if you just want some further information about eco-solvent printing, then don’t hesitate to call us today. Our team of experts will be happy to help.

With The Following Easy Tips to Make Ink Cartridges Last Longer on Large Format Printer

In our daily life, home printers are an absolute necessity to print documents and photos. You just can't survive in the 21st century without one. But the bane of every owner is printer ink cartridges, which always seem to run out of ink or dry up at the most inopportune time. Plus ink cartridges are expensive. If you're tired of shelling out for printer cartridges, get acquainted with these simple tricks, and your ink cartridge will last longer. That means less hassle and less expense for you.

 Ignore Out-of-Ink Warnings
printer ink cartridges
 Erin Huffstetler

Getting a warning that your printer is out of ink? Go ahead and ignore it. In a lab test, PC World found that ink cartridges still contained anywhere from 8 to 45 percent of their ink when this message started to pop up.

Avoid Chunky Fonts and Bolds
Thick fonts and bolded text require extra ink to print, so skinny up your text and save. Some ink-sipping fonts to try: Arial and new courier.

Want to save even more? Download Ecofont, a free font that uses 20 percent less ink by placing small white circles within each character.

Use a Smaller Font Size
What's the difference between a 12-point font and a 14-point font? Size, certainly, but also the amount of ink used--so super-size only when you need to.

Proof Before You Print
Give your documents an extra read through before you print them out, and you might save yourself a reprint.

Tweak Your Printer Settings
Printers are factory set to be ink guzzlers, but that's easy enough to change. To update your printer's default settings on a Windows-based computer, click start > printers > right click on your printer and select printer preferences.

Some changes worth considering:
Set the print quality to "draft"
Set the color to "print in grayscale"
Set the "document options" to print multiple pages per sheet
Print Just What You Need
If you need to print an article or recipe off of a website, but you're not interested in printing all of the ads and photos that go with it, just go to printwhatyoulike.com insert the URL for the page; and you can delete all those ink-hogging extras with just a few clicks.

Use Print Preview
Have you ever printed something from the web only to find that it didn't fit the page? What a waste of ink, paper, and time. Fortunately, this is one problem that can be avoided: Just hit "print preview" before you send anything to print, and you'll be able to catch and correct any issues before they make it onto paper.

Check for Clogs
Has your cartridge stopped printing properly? Before you toss it, make sure a clogged nozzle isn't the culprit. To do so, simply remove the cartridge from the printer and wipe the bottom with a damp paper towel. Then reinstall it and try printing again.

Hit Save Instead of Print
Would a digital record work just as well as a printed one? If so, save the file to your hard drive or flash drive and forgo the printing process entirely.

How to Calibrate Your Large Format Printer to Get Correct Color?

Have you ever printed a graphic that looked "Christmas" red and green on screen but when you printed it, you ended up with purple and lime-yellow? The way images look on screen differs from the way they look in print, even though they aren't always so dramatic. Calibrating your monitor provides a screen display that simulates what prints on paper. Calibrating your large format printer ensures that what you print is consistent with what you see on screen. The two go hand in hand.

 Why Colors Look Different
There are many reasons why monitor displays and printed output are dissimilar including:

Monitors use additive RGB color, while printing uses subtractive CMYK pigments. Each method is a different way of reproducing color.
The human eye can distinguish more colors than inks can print.
In print, ink layering and overlapping cause subtle shifts in color not found in the individual pixels that make up a screen image. On screen, a red circle may overlap a yellow circle cleanly. In print, you may see orange where the overlap occurs.
Printed images don't have the same range, saturation, and contrast as a monitor, which makes the colors typically darker and less vibrant than on screen. Paper texture and brightness also affect—and change—a printed image.

How to Calibrate
The first step in printer calibration is to calibrate your monitor. Then, make sure you use the correct printer driver for your printer. Within the printer driver are controls for fine-tuning the overall appearance of color from your printer. Depending on your needs, this may be sufficient to get the color you want.

If you want to move beyond the basics of color calibration, you have two general methods to select from: visual and mechanical. The more expensive and accurate option is to use a hardware device that can read the output from your printer and make adjustments as necessary. For most users, visual calibration or the use of generic color profiles for your hardware is adequate.

Basic Visual Calibration
Using test images with a wide range of tonal values that ideally consist of a number of color bars, photographs, and blocks of colors, you can visually match the screen and print colors. You display and print a test image and then compare and adjust grayscale and color output in the controls provided for your printer.

You can obtain digital test images from the web and from some software or hardware manufacturers. Whether you are calibrating visually or with color management software, target images provide a range of color and grayscale targets for calibrating monitors, printers, scanners, and digital cameras. You can find free and commercial targets and other test images.

Color Calibration With ICC Profiles
ICC profiles provide a way to ensure consistent color across all your devices. Color and print professionals use files that are specific to each device on the system and contain information about how that device produces color. They create separate profiles based on various combinations of ink and paper—factors that affect the appearance of the printed material. The stock or default profiles for your printer model that come with your software, from your wide format printer manufacturer, or from other websites, are often adequate for most nonprofessional printing situations.

For precise color management needs, you can use color management software to develop custom ICC profiles for any device. Additionally, some online sources can create custom profiles for you. One such vendor is Chromix. ICC profiles are available for printers, monitors, scanners, digital cameras, and other equipment.

Calibration Tools
Color professionals use Color Management Systems, which include tools for calibrating monitors, scanners, printers, and digital cameras so they all "speak the same color." These tools often include a variety of generic profiles as well as the means to customize profiles for any of your devices.

Choose the calibration tools that match your pocketbook and your needs for accurate representation of color on screen and in print.

Don't stop with your inkjet printer. Calibrate all your color devices: monitor, scanner, and digital camera.

How Dye Sublimation Printing Technology Change Your Digital Printing Business?

DYE SUBLIMATION PRINTING ON FABRIC
In recent years, advancements in print technology, equipment, and materials have allowed for further visual merchandising and marketing creativity. Dye sublimation, the preferred imaging method for soft signage and exhibition graphics, uses an ink-jet based method of printing colorants onto fabric.

The dying process involves both heat and pressure to integrate the dyes with the material. Often called dye-sub for short, the cutting edge printing method allows for rich color saturation and efficiencies in shipping, handling and installation.

Seven reasons why demand for dye-sub printing is rapidly increasing:
1. Dye-sub lasts longer than most alternatives.
The actual chemical bonding of the ink with the soft material means dye sublimation printing is extremely durable. Dye-sub prints last just as long as traditional graphics, and they’re also easy to take care of. They can be washed or steamed easily.

2. Dye-sub prints look great.
Materials printed with the dye sublimation process present images that are distinctly superior to inkjet or other printing methods. The dye sublimation process imparts a continuous flow of color rather than individual dots or pixels that typify inkjet printers.

As a result, from distances both near and far, the colors are clearer and brighter when professional dye-sub equipment is used. Given the remarkable depth of color and sharply defined edges, any side-by-side comparison is immediately conclusive.

3. Dye-sub is versatile.
Dye sublimation prints work great for either indoor or outdoor use. They are also easily shaped – the flexibility and fluidity of fabric allows it to conform to most any desired shape or contoured appearance.

Silicone edge graphics, also known as SEG, involve adding a thin strip of silicone around the edges of a dye-sub printed fabric. The fabric can then be easily mounted on an aluminum frame. This installation process is very user-friendly. Any store staff can easily install new graphics without hiring a separate crew.

4. Large format printer options.
With dye sublimation, you can easily print 16 feet by any length. As a single seamless piece, dye-sub provides many large-format application benefits.

5. Variety of digital textile materials.
Materials can range anywhere from wovens, vinyls, polyesters, and rigid materials, as long as they are treated with a direct polyester coating (done by the manufacturer). The finished product will be inherently strong, resilient and dimensionally stable. For installation, aluminum frames allow for a low-cost and lightweight solution for fabrics that still looks better than its more expensive and heavier alternatives.

6. Dye-sub is cost effective.
Dye-sub printed fabric is lighter than traditional rigid materials resulting in reduced weight. As a result, shipping costs are exponentially lower than with other printing methods. Wide format dye-sub fabric can be folded (rather than rolled or packed flat), so it takes up far less space and can be shipped for a much lower cost.

7. Efficient storage.
Compared to rigid substrates, fabric is lightweight and flexible allowing for more efficient storage. Due to the convenience of storage, dye-sub pieces can easily be repurposed for future campaigns.
